Howdy! I’m Lily,

On this website, you'll find various time-lapse videos I created from webcams placed on ice floes in the Arctic Ocean during my time at the University of Washington as a CICOES Summer 2023 Intern. These time lapses are helpful for monitoring Arctic sea ice, especially during the melt season in the summer. Climate change has rapidly decreased the amount of sea ice forming in the Arctic each year, which has grave implications for wildlife, sea levels, and Indigenous populations.

In the videos, you'll see various buoys from many organizations and buoy programs (see Resources for the full list). These instruments collect temperature and pressure data, among other things, which allows scientists to use them for their research. This is important because there are few weather stations in the Arctic because of the harsh conditions. Using buoys is an in situ way to validate information collected from satellites and other remote sensing tools (and the webcams can visually validate these measurements!).

Enough about me writing about the Arctic; it's more fun to watch some videos! (You may even spot a polar bear or too).

Happy watching!
